Vienna Beef

Vienna Chicago-style hotdogs -- all-beef, "Kosher-syle" frankfurters -- made their debut at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. The dog was created by a couple of Austro-Hungarian immigrants, Emil Reichel and Sam Ladany, who opened their first Vienna Sausage Co. shop on the Near West Side a year later. Since 1972 Vienna Beef has been headquartered on the North Side, at 2501 N. Damen. Non-natives and children occasionally make the mistake of putting ketchup on a Chicago-style hotdog. The authentic Vienna hotdog is steamed, deposited in a soft poppyseed bun and topped with yellow mustard, bright green relish, chopped onion, tomato slices and a Kosher pickle spear. 5. Hot Stove Cool Music

Bob and I are thrilled about today's announcement bringing Hot Stove Cool Music to Chicago this summer.  You will see the details below.  This is a perfect way to give Theo Epstein a proper Chicago rock and roll welcome to the city.  The lineup is dynamite.  Billy Corgan is a huge Cubs fan and the timing works out well for Smashing Pumpkins, who will be releasing their new record just a few days after the June 14 event.  Bob and I will join the All-Star Band for a mid-concert jam and we will have lots of celebrities on hand at Metro, Chicago's iconic rock club.

  7. Conversations with tourists in Brussels show little awareness of Chicago

    — Chicago has miles to go before it is understood, appreciated and visited more frequently by overseas travelers. That much was clear in the spring sunshine here in this European capital as officials from Chicago arrived to boost the Windy City's image before hosting the NATO summit in May.

  9. 50 places to eat for $5 or less

Dining out for $5 or less may seem like a fantasy, but Southern California has much to offer for those on a tight budget. For affordable Vietnamese fare, for example, venture to Garden Grove or Westminster. Or look to food trucks for unique, inexpensive eats. Even some pricier restaurants offer a selection of cheap eats during happy hours.

  11. Mustard mystery lingers

Q: Growing up in Old Town back in the late 1950s and early 1960s meant numerous trips to the North Avenue beach and Lincoln Park Zoo, among other places, and eating cotton candy and hot dogs. I remember the hot dogs at Café Brauer at the zoo came with only one condiment — mustard — that I believe came in gallon jugs with a pump. Try as I might, I have been unable to find who made it. Would you be able to find out who that was? Are they still around?
