    Newport News personal trainer Brian Cole scaled Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the tallest freestanding peak in Africa, in February. After altitude sickness foiled his climb a couple of years ago, Cole recommitted to the effort to reach the summit, 19,000 feet+, as a tool to fundraise for Alzheimer's research. He dedicated his 2013 climb to his friend John Hightower, former head of the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, who has an Alzheimer's diagnosis.
